Operations Summit: Summer Spotlight

Flexibility by Design

June 22, 2021
10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Celebrate the start of the summer season with CanREA!

The Canadian Renewable Energy Association presents a fun, summer edition of the CanREA Operations Summit, the largest event of its kind in Canada.

One-day only, June 22, 2021.

CanREA’s Summer Spotlight will focus on flexibility by design, because renewable-energy technologies are evolving so rapidly that being flexible is not just an option, but a necessity.

The operations sector is at the leading edge of Canada’s clean-energy transition, blazing a trail for the rapid adoption of new ideas and demonstrating a whole new level of adaptability and innovation to ensure the safe, reliable and effective operation of renewable-energy sites.

This is the perfect opportunity for site operators, installers, manufacturers, service providers, researchers and supply-chain managers to brush up on emerging concepts in operations to help inform summertime work and strategic planning.

Join this fast paced, single-day event to learn from the experts, connect with your colleagues, relax with folks you already know and expand your networks.

Program Highlights

10:30-11:00 (ET) – Welcome networking and attendee Q&A

11:00-11:25 (ET) – Opening Remarks
CanREA welcomes all attendees to this fast-paced event and gets things started with our keynote address, presenting a real, Canadian example of the Flexibility by Design concept. When it comes to solar, wind, and energy storage, operators, manufacturers, service providers and supply chains will require built-in flexibility in their grid interaction, workforce, design, and full life-cycle.

11:30-12:20 (ET) – Grid flexibility
The energy transition is happening. Participation in Canada’s rapidly changing grid will require new ways of operating renewable energy sites. In this session we get familiar with a modern understanding of the grid edge, and the methods being used by wind, solar and energy-storage operators to provide dynamic services across a flexible, local network.

1:15-1:40 (ET) – Making new associations
In the past year, both the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) and the American Clean Power Association (ACP) launched dedicated, multi-technology operations programs for their members. Building on strong wind-energy foundations, these two programs face similar challenges and opportunities in building up solar and storage operational expertise in North America. This insightful conversation identifies roadblocks and invites the industry to get on board.

1:45-2:35 (ET) – Summer boost
In Canada, renewable energy professionals must adapt to a uniquely extreme climate, ranging from the deep freeze of winter to the sizzling heat and humidity of a Canadian summer.  In this session, speakers present a few concepts to consider applying within your operations this summer, suitable for everyone from rooftop-solar installers to wind-turbine technicians. Join the discussion afterwards to share your own tips and tricks for operational flexibility.

2:45-3:35 (ET)Designing in flexibility
Thanks to continuous advances, technology challenges many established operational practices. New engineering, software and hardware solutions may need to be considered at current and future sites to keep up with available technologies and grid demands. This session identifies several design considerations for commercial-scale sites that could unlock more potential for operational flexibility. Afterwards, be sure to network with experts sharing their experiences and solutions.

3:45-4:30 (ET)Circularity and sustainability
Canada’s operators, service providers and supply chains need optimal disposal solutions for wind, solar and energy storage components.  By getting ahead of the curve, the operations sector can ease the energy transition and inspire new development through circular-economy principles.  This session provides a platform for discussing exciting developments in the world of secondary markets, recycling and alternative uses for renewable-energy components.

4:30-5:00 (ET) – Wrap Up Reception
It’s your turn: Cap off a full day of learning more about the future of flexibility by design by joining your fellow attendees for a wrap-up reception where you can discuss ideas in a fun and friendly virtual environment.

CanREA members are entitled to a 50% discount on this event.  Please log in to the member-only area to get the discount code for registration.
