CanREA Connects—Ontario

On June 19, 2024, leaders from Ontario’s renewable energy and energy storage industry gathered on the rooftop patio at the Radisson Blu Toronto Downtown for CanREA Connects—Ontario, our highly anticipated annual “Summer Solstice” networking reception. 

The event provided a vibrant platform for nearly 250 movers and shakers in Ontario’s renewable energy and energy storage sector to connect, collaborate and discuss future opportunities.

Energy Storage Alberta – CanREA Summit

On June 5, 2024, the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) hosted its inaugural Energy Storage Alberta—CanREA Summit in downtown Calgary, bringing together nearly 200 industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss the pivotal role of energy storage in Alberta’s evolving energy landscape.

The Summit provided in-depth insights into Alberta’s Restructured Energy Market (RES) and showcased innovative solutions and opportunities for energy storage in the region.

Against the backdrop of sweeping policy reforms and market dynamics in Alberta, attendees were privy to invaluable insights on energy storage from expert speakers during the full-day industry conference.

Vittoria Bellissimo, President and CEO of CanREA, kicked off the summit with a warm welcome, setting the stage for the day’s discussions and emphasizing the importance of energy storage in Alberta’s future energy strategy.

Nathan Neudorf, Alberta’s Minister of Affordability and Utilities, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the provincial government’s ongoing exploration of energy storage solutions.

The Summit also presented valuable networking opportunities for attendees, who were able to discuss the future of energy storage in Alberta while making valuable new connections.

The opening plenary session was moderated by Emma Graney. She was joined by Elias Soto and Nicole LeBlanc. Together, they explored the future of Alberta’s electricity market and the critical need for energy storage, discussing market reforms, regulatory changes, and the strategic importance of storage solutions.

In the first session, titled “Recipe for Reliability: Energy Storage in Alberta,” the discussion focused on how energy storage can enhance the reliability of Alberta’s grid, addressing challenges identified in the AESO’s 2023 Reliability Requirements Roadmap. Panelists shared insights into the various reliability solutions that energy storage can provide, such as ancillary services, frequency regulation, ramping support, voltage support, and black start capabilities.

Next was a session on “Revolutionizing the Grid: The Potential of Energy Storage for Wires in Alberta,” which outlined the new rules and potential benefits of energy storage for distribution and transmission utilities following the proclamation of The Electricity Statutes Amendment Act, 2022 (formerly Bill 22). The panelists provided examples of successful implementations and discussed how utilities can leverage storage to reduce wires costs for customers.

The third panel, on “Arbitraging the Market: Energy Storage Market Opportunities in Alberta,” convened industry leaders who explored the transformative potential of energy storage solutions within Alberta’s energy sector. Led by Carissa Browning, the session provided a comprehensive overview of the Demand Opportunity Service (DOS) tariff and its implications for energy storage facilities. Esteemed panelists, including Akira Yamamoto, Tory Whiteside, Colette Chekerda, and Nizar Yousef, shared invaluable insights on leveraging energy storage to mitigate market volatility and optimize renewable resources.

The final session of the Summit, “Beyond the Battery: Innovative Energy Storage Technologies,” showcased the evolution of energy storage beyond conventional lithium-ion batteries. Moderator, Sara Hastings-Simon from the University of Calgary, and panelists Sarah Griffiths, Chris Owttrim, and Shaun Andrews, presented their pioneering energy storage solutions. Attendees were treated to an exclusive glimpse into the future of energy storage development, from long-duration storage to novel battery chemistries.

The Energy Storage Alberta—CanREA Summit provided valuable insights into the future of energy storage in Alberta. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the market changes, opportunities, and technological advancements that will drive Alberta towards a more reliable energy future. 

The Summit also showcased a diverse array of case studies, illuminating the real-world impact of energy storage projects across Alberta. From enhancing grid reliability to unlocking new revenue streams, these success stories underscored the pivotal role of energy storage in driving tangible outcomes within Alberta’s energy transition.

Clean Power Finance Canada– CanREA Summit

On June 19, 2024, the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) hosted the Clean Power Finance Canada—CanREA Summit at the CIBC Square in downtown Toronto. The event brought together nearly 140 people interested in hearing from clean power industry leaders and investment experts on the financial side of Canada’s renewable energy and energy storage industry.

This CanREA Summit provided comprehensive insights into the financial landscape of Canada’s clean energy market, featuring discussions on investment opportunities, risk management, revenue streams, and innovative technologies. Attendees gained valuable knowledge on how to navigate the evolving clean energy sector.

To set the stage for the day’s discussions, Vittoria Bellissimo (President and CEO of CanREA) and James Brooks (Managing Director & Co-Head of Energy, Infrastructure & Transition Investment Banking at CIBC Capital Markets) opened the Summit with a warm welcome and insightful remarks that emphasized the importance of financial strategies in advancing Canada’s clean energy future.

The keynote address was delivered by the Hon. Lisa Raitt, the Vice-Chair of Global Investment Banking at CIBC, and a former federal Minister of Transport, of Labour, and of Natural Resources. Raitt highlighted the critical role of strategic investments and policy support in accelerating Canada’s clean energy transition.

The opening plenary session, “State of the Industry: Clean Power in Canada,” provided a finance-focused overview of the clean energy investment landscape in Canada. Panelists explored the latest industry trends, long-term forecasts, upcoming procurements, and the corporate PPA environment across Canada, emphasizing the political headwinds and tailwinds affecting project development and execution.

In a session on “Revenues & Reporting: Understanding Clean Power Value Streams,” panelists delved into the various revenue streams and market pricing available across Canada, including competitive procurement contracts, corporate power purchase agreements, investment tax credits, ancillary services for energy storage, government funding, and carbon offset markets. The panel also explored how ESG reporting and Green Taxonomy are evolving.

In “The Game of Risk: Identifying & Mitigating Risk Profiles for Clean-Power Projects” session, panelists discussed the new and evolving risks faced by clean power projects, including supply-chain management, project siting and permitting, transmission access, political carbon pricing risk, and workforce development. The panel provided strategies on how the industry manages these factors and how investors and financiers view and calculate risk.

In the session “Indigenous Equity Financing: Exploring Funding Avenues for Indigenous Partnerships,” panelists discussed the barriers faced by Indigenous communities in securing financing for equity partnerships in clean energy projects. They also explored the available and forthcoming solutions to these challenges, emphasizing the importance of equitable access to financing.

They also discussed the financing and revenue challenges and opportunities associated with these innovations.

CanREA Golf Tournament—Alberta

The Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) hosted another successful installment of its Golf Tournament Series on July 27, 2024, at the prestigious Blue Devil Golf Course in Calgary. This event served as a cornerstone in CanREA’s efforts to foster collaboration and networking within the Canadian renewable energy sector.

More than 150 industry leaders, professionals and enthusiasts from across the Canadian renewable energy and energy storage landscape converged at the Blue Devil Golf Course for a day filled with camaraderie (and a little competition).

Representatives from CanREA member companies, as well as key stakeholders in the renewable energy industry, seized the opportunity to strengthen existing relationships and forge new partnerships amidst the greenery of the golf course. 

The day commenced with a warm welcome as participants arrived for registration and enjoyed a BBQ lunch while engaging in lively conversations and exchanging insights on the latest developments in renewable energy. As the clock struck 1 p.m., the tournament teed off with a shotgun start, setting teams on a journey across the manicured fairways. Participants embraced the scramble format, working together to navigate the course and showcase their skills. 

As the sun began to set, golfers gathered inside the clubhouse for a celebratory dinner and prize presentation. Congrats to all our day’s award-winning individuals and teams for their outstanding performances and memorable moments on the course. 

The CanREA Golf Tournament Series continues to serve as a cornerstone event for the Canadian renewable energy sector. As participants bid farewell to another successful tournament, they left with strengthened relationships, new ideas, and a shared commitment to advancing the renewable energy landscape in Canada.

CanREA Connects—Quebec (spring networking reception)

As Quebec carries out ambitious net-zero goals, CanREA is working hard to develop significant opportunities for our members in the wind, solar and energy storage industries.

Net-Zero Quebec—CanREA Summit

The Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) is proud to launch a new conference series this spring. Each CanREA Summit will be unique, offering a deep, focused and specialized dive into topics relevant to a particular region of Canada, such as energy storage in Alberta, achieving carbon neutrality in Quebec and financing the development of renewable energy across Canada.

The Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) hosted the first-ever Net-Zero Quebec—CanREA Summit, in Montreal on May 14. This full-day conference was the event of the year for Quebec’s exciting renewable energy and energy storage sector.

With a turnout of over 150 attendees, it was evident there are many people in the industry ready to work towards achieving Quebec’s energy transition and Quebec’s net-zero targets by 2050.

Net-Zero Quebec served as a hub for discussions on important topics, such as:

  • Spearheading the energy transition with sustainable investments
  • Combatting climate change through government incentives
  • Implementing Hydro-Québec’s Action Plan 2035 to procure as much as 200 TWh of renewable energy by 2050
  • Collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Achieving net-zero in Quebec’s buildings, industry and transportation sector

With expert presentations, exhibitions and effective networking opportunities, this unique Summit became a key event for Quebec’s renewable energy and energy storage industry. Etienne Lecompte
Founder of LCAB
He is a recognized cleantech entrepreneur who’s been in the renewable energy, software development, and regulatory compliance space for about 15 years. During those years he has created and grown a number of companies. He believes strongly that renewable energy projects are part of the solution and need to manage regulatory programs pragmatically and proactively. Etienne is a graduate from McGill University and holds an MBA from INSEAD. He lives in Montreal, Quebec and is a proud father of three.

Louis Boivin
Partner, Deloitte Canada
Louis Boivin is the Engagement Partner of the Gi3 team (Investment and Innovation Incentives) for Quebec, which is made up of more than 40 professionals located across the province. He is also the National Leader for the development of IT tools being used by our national government incentives practice. He has also been responsible for coordinating several firm and client initiatives aimed at improving the Quebec and Canadian tax incentive regimes.  Louis launched his taxation practice with Deloitte in 2001. Louis carries out his main functions in the government incentives sector (tax incentives and grants) for public and private entities active in the natural resources and manufacturing sectors. His clients include several multinationals with places of business in Canada and Quebec and several SMEs located across the province. 

CanREA Golf Tournament—Ontario

The Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) hosted another successful installment of its Golf Tournament Series on May 28, 2024, at the prestigious Royal Woodbine Golf and Country Club in Toronto. This event served as a cornerstone in CanREA’s efforts to foster collaboration and networking within the Canadian renewable energy sector.

More than 110 industry leaders, professionals and enthusiasts from across the Canadian renewable energy and energy storage landscape converged at the Royal Woodbine Golf and Country Club for a day filled with camaraderie (and a little competition). Representatives from CanREA member companies, as well as key stakeholders in the renewable energy industry, seized the opportunity to strengthen existing relationships and forge new partnerships amidst the greenery of the golf course.

The day commenced with a warm welcome as participants arrived for registration and enjoyed a BBQ lunch while engaging in lively conversations and exchanging insights on the latest developments in renewable energy. As the clock struck 1 p.m., the tournament teed off with a shotgun start, setting teams on a journey across the manicured fairways. Participants embraced the scramble format, working together to navigate the course and showcase their skills.

As the sun began to set, participants gathered once more to enjoy a dinner while reflecting on the day’s highlights and accomplishments. Congrats to all of our day’s award-winning individuals and teams for their outstanding performances and memorable moments on the course.

The CanREA Golf Tournament Series continues to serve as a cornerstone event for the Canadian renewable energy sector. As participants bid farewell to another successful tournament, they left with strengthened relationships, new ideas, and a shared commitment to advancing the renewable energy landscape in Canada.
