Ottawa, July 23, 2026—The Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) welcomes today’s agreement between New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to strengthen regional electricity co-operation across the Maritimes.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) marks an important step toward a more coordinated, affordable and reliable regional electricity system. It also reflects many of CanREA’s long-standing recommendations, including stronger regional electricity planning, enhanced transmission coordination, and a more integrated approach to deploying renewable energy and energy storage across Atlantic Canada. As demand continues to grow across the region, collaboration will help unlock the clean electricity needed to power Atlantic Canada’s growing economy.
“This agreement shows what’s possible when provinces work together to plan for the future,” said Eddie Oldfield, Director of Policy for the Maritimes at CanREA. “Regional co-operation will strengthen the electricity system while creating new opportunities for renewable energy and energy storage.”
CanREA is particularly encouraged by the MOU’s commitment to develop a Maritime Regional Resource and Transmission Roadmap. By identifying opportunities for coordinated planning across electricity generation, transmission, demand-side resources and emerging energy technologies, this initiative can help identify the most cost-effective pathways to meet growing electricity demand while unlocking new opportunities to deploy wind energy, solar energy, energy storage and the transmission infrastructure needed to connect them.
The MOU also reflects recommendations put forward in An Atlantic Canadian Energy Future, a collaborative report endorsed by CanREA and other organizations, which called for enhanced regional planning, governance and electricity infrastructure to strengthen Atlantic Canada’s energy future. CanREA welcomes the provinces’ commitment to evaluating the benefits of enhanced regional planning and operational coordination, while identifying actions that can move forward under existing legislative and regulatory frameworks, as well as those that may require future policy changes. CanREA also celebrates today’s federal investment in the Prince Edward Island—New Brunswick Interconnection Expansion Project, which will strengthen regional transmission infrastructure and support the long-term objectives outlined in the MOU.

The ambitious timeline established in the MOU demonstrates a shared commitment to preparing the region’s electricity system for growing demand and a cleaner energy future. CanREA looks forward to working with provincial governments, utilities, system operators, Indigenous partners and industry stakeholders to support implementation of the MOU and help deliver the renewable energy, energy storage and transmission infrastructure that will power Atlantic Canada’s future.
