Webinar — Build transfer agreements: Technical risk management for Canadian utilities

October 5, 2022, 1 pm (ET)

There is new interest in different ownership models for renewables assets in Canada, as evidenced by utilities taking ownership stakes in, or full ownership of, wind, solar, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities under development. Several variants of Build-Transfer Agreements (BTAs) are currently being deployed in Canada.

DNV and CanREA joined on October 5 for an educational webinar and to learn more about this topic!

DNV shared information on technical risk management with existing and emerging utility players in the marketplace. DNV also highlighted key elements to consider in the negotiations of the BTA agreements.  Specifically, DNV described how to best manage risk when negotiating the Asset Purchase Agreement (APA) or Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contract (EPC), and its recommendations for what constitutes best practice.

Speakers:

Reem Bashatly, Director, Engineering

Michael Cookson, Senior Project Manager, Engineering

Hadis Moradi, Senior Project Manager, Engineering

Adam Morrill, Field Engineer, Engineering

CANCELLED- Operations Summit Spotlight Webinar Series – Cybersecurity

This webinar has been cancelled due to severe weather that has caused an ongoing power outage in the Ottawa area. We apologize for the inconvenience. We would encourage you to check out the program for the CanREA Operations Summit 2022 for other learning opportunities that might be of interest.

Webinar 3: Cybersecurity
May 26, 2022
1 p.m. to 2 p.m. ET

The third webinar in this series will focus on the critical issue of cybersecurity.

Canada’s critical-infrastructure defenders are currently being asked to bolster their awareness and protection against certain cyber-threats.

As the keepers of important power-generation assets, renewable-energy operations and maintenance professionals will play a critical role in keeping the lights on across the country, amidst targeted energy-infrastructure attacks.

In this cybersecurity operations-focused webinar, you will hear from key organizations in North America’s cyber security awareness and defense network, who will speak directly to Canadian wind, solar and energy storage operators and service providers. This is an important webinar providing awareness and learning on cybersecurity issues that will be helpful for anyone using information and operational technology (IT/OT) in their daily work, whether their official title relates directly to cyber security or not.

Michael Russell of the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security will provide an update on cyber security threats to Canada’s critical infrastructure and some resources for site staff to pursue.

Andrew Lackey of the Energy Infrastructure Security Department of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) will provide some additional context and insight into what they are seeing, and the networks being established to protect Canada’s energy infrastructure against current and emerging threats.

Invited Speakers

  • Andrew Lackey – Natural Resources Canada
  • Michael Russell – Canadian Centre for Cyber Security

Operations Summit Spotlight Webinar Series – Circular Economy

Operations Summit Spotlight Webinar Series
CanREA proudly presents a series of free operations-focused webinars, leading up to the CanREA Operations Summit 2022, this year’s must-attend event for wind, solar, and energy storage site operations in Canada. These three sessions provide a preview of the type of content you can access at the two-day, in-person event in Toronto on May 31 and June 1. In anticipation, join us for informative and engaging panels on three key topics: cybersecurity, circular economy and extreme weather, insofar as they affect the operation of renewable energy sites. This webinar series will provide important learnings for Canada’s operational staff, regardless of what stage of project construction, maintenance or decommissioning they are working on. (in English only)

Webinar 2: Circular Economy
May 19, 2022
1 p.m. to 2 p.m. ET

The second webinar in the Operations Summit Spotlight Webinar Series will introduce full-circle economic principles as they apply to North America’s renewable-energy supply chains.

The global supply chain for the materials and components needed to equip the energy transition is currently under a phenomenal amount of stress, especially considering the timeframe required to meet Canada’s net-zero goals.

This webinar will consider the concept of a circular economy, incorporating forward and reverse supply chains into a single system that recognizes waste streams as inputs to new production, as a way to help Canada achieve a responsible, just and sustainable transition. In this circular economy operations-focused webinar, be prepared to have your understanding of supply chains brought full circle and get inspired to find innovations within your own wind, solar, and energy storage context.

Stephanie Cairns, a member of the CCA Expert Panel on the Circular Economy in Canada will expose some of the findings shared in their “Turning Point” report on Canada’s circularity, including the role that renewable energy will play.

Peter Perrault of Enel will demonstrate the massive opportunity introduced by a circular economy for industry and energy consumers, and how they are utilizing these concepts to build their business.

Jos de Krieger of Superuse Studios will present some of the practical and innovative supply chain solutions they champion at their bespoke projects around the world.

CanREA Networking Reception — Alberta

May 17, 2022
Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel
Calgary, Alberta

On May 17, the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) held a special, in-person networking reception in Calgary, bringing together nearly 100 CanREA members, electricity sector innovators and business leaders. It was a must-attend event for people with an interest in the wind energy, solar energy, and energy-storage sectors in Alberta.

CanREA’s Alberta Networking Reception brought together nearly 100 CanREA members, electricity sector innovators and business leaders in Calgary.

“The event was very well attended, and people were excited to have the opportunity to meet again face to face after a challenging couple of years,” said Robert Hornung, President and CEO of CanREA. “The atmosphere was extremely positive, reflecting the same energy and vibrancy we see in the Alberta market right now, which continues to be Canada’s leading destination for wind, solar and storage investment in Canada.”

When it comes to renewable energy, the Alberta advantage is clear for all to see. Wind and solar energy continue to grow at an unprecedented rate across the province, with more than 2,100 MW of wind capacity and 458 MW of solar capacity already installed, and at least 2,500 MW of additional capacity expected in the next couple of years.

The opportunities keep growing and the industry keeps delivering in Alberta, in keeping with CanREA’s 2050 Vision.

Thanks to everyone for joining CanREA for this networking opportunity, one of three exciting events located in three key markets this spring. Next up: our “Summer Solstice” networking reception in Toronto on June 21.
