Once ‘leading the charge’ on renewables, Alberta now seeing ‘wave’ of cancellations: report

Alberta’s renewables industry saw investment surge in the early 2020s, but will it continue into the latter half of the decade?

For several years, Alberta led the pack for renewables investment in Canada — now, that advantage may be slipping away.

With its wealth of year-round sunshine and ample gusts from the Canadian Rockies, the prairie province famed for its oilsands is well-positioned to lead Canada in wind and solar generation.

For now, it does.

Last year, Alberta generated 5,715 megawatts from wind, about 200 megawatts more than Ontario. For context, up to 1,000 households can be supplied by one megawatt.

The only other province to approach the two wind-workhorses is Quebec, which generated over 4,000 megawatts, according to Canadian Renewable Energy Association data. Read more here.
